What’s your role in IS?
My name is Amber and I work in Information Systems (IS) as a Performance Insights Analyst in the Intelligence & Analytics team. My team specialise in data manipulation, modelling and visualisation. I also play a crucial role in a segment of the team called the Customer Squad. As a Scrum Master, I help the team work efficiently and stay flexible in handling projects related to customer information. This means we work together smoothly and adapt quickly to changes, which is essential in our dynamic field.
What made you apply for the Digital Apprenticeship?
I studied mainly IT and Business-related subjects at Sixth Form whilst working part time as a Manger at McDonalds! I found that I enjoyed working and applying new skills over the traditional way of studying, therefore when I found this apprenticeship it was the perfect solution. Being able to get ahead and gain vital employment skills was a goal of mine.
What did you do throughout your apprenticeship?
I completed a Degree Apprenticeship in Digital & Technology Solutions which meant I worked full time in various roles across IS Monday – Thursday and attended University every Friday. I had the opportunity to experience roles right through the lifecycle of a new system. From business analysis, gathering requirements for new systems, to developing and testing those systems. In my second year I realised I loved developing and coding solutions, whether that be using data to highlight better business decisions or finding new insight through visuals.
What do you enjoy about working at NWL?
I really enjoy being able to get involved in volunteering across the community, alongside my day job, for example, I am a rep for Women in Tech and mentor new apprentices or placement students, which is a great experience to support others and enhance my own personal development. The opportunities and support here is endless and there is never a dull week. My favourite week of the year has to be, the Innovation Festival. We get so many companies and minds together, and it’s exciting to have the opportunity to spend the time working together to come up with solutions to solve complex business problems in new and innovative ways and being able to implement those ideas.
What support did you get with your degree and learning?
First, I was allocated a mentor (a member of the management team) who could provide me with a vast level of knowledge. I had a buddy who I could talk to about day-to-day problems and receive support. I then had the teams I was placed in and surrounding teams to support me with assignments and training. Being in a group of 10 I had my fellow apprentices and Manager to lean on too. We really are One Team here at NWL and you begin forming relationships with many of the teams who are all happy to help.
