Work is set to start on the final part of a project to upgrade the water network in Benfleet, Essex.

Roadworks on London Road were lifted earlier this month by Essex & Suffolk Water to minimise traffic disruption during the exam period.

The last stage of work is set to begin on Monday, June 24.

Initially, this will require a single eastbound lane closure, for a short section in the area around Clare Road and Bartley Road.

Following that, an additional westbound land closure in the area will be required, leaving single lanes open both eastbound and westbound. This is to ensure the new mains that have been laid can be safely connected into the local network. Access to Clare Road will remain open.

It is anticipated the work will be completed in early July, finalising the water company’s wider investment, aimed at reducing the potential for older water mains to burst within the carriageway. Such incidents can cause unplanned emergency closures that severely impact local road networks.

Essex & Suffolk Water has been working closely with Essex County Council’s Highways Department to plan and manage the work to ensure minimum disruption to motorists.

Daren Still, Essex & Suffolk Water’s Project Manager, said: “We are nearing the end of this essential piece of work, which will deliver long-term benefits for road users by reducing the risk of unplanned disruption.

“This final stage of work is timed to minimise impact. These lane closures are required to ensure safe working and a speedy completion of the project, and we will work to be clear of the highway as soon as we are able.

“We would like to thank our customers in the area, and motorists who use London Road, for their patience and understanding.”
