Over 3000 runners descended upon Kielder this weekend as the largest ever marathon weekend took place.

The sun came out as Kielder Marathon weekend returned, with thousands of runners descending upon the picturesque town to take part in one of five events – the Marathon, Half-marathon, 10K, Gravel Duathlon and the Junior Races.

Known as “Britain’s most beautiful marathon”, the main event takes place alongside Northumbrian Water’s iconic Kielder Reservoir, and sees participants running a gruelling 26 miles on and off-road course through the stunning Kielder Forest.

This year, Ricky Lightfoot, of Ellenborough AC, and Jane Hodgson, of Morpeth Harriers, took home the titles of male and female marathon winners, with times of 02:34:24 and 03:16:05 retrospectively.

Callum Hanson, of Pudsey & Bramley AC was the first male to cross the line of the half-marathon, finishing in an impressive 01:14:29 – while Luisa Hartley was the female winner with a time of 01:30:39.

One of the female half-marathon runners was also treated to a huge surprise as her partner dropped to one knee and proposed on the finish line.

David Hall, Head of Commercial Strategy and Transformation at Northumbrian Water said: “Kielder Marathon weekend is always a true spectacle, but this year has been the biggest and most magnificent yet.

“Hearing stories from participants, and knowing how far people travel for this special event is amazing, and we absolutely love welcoming so many fantastic individuals to our site.

“Of course, it wouldn’t be possible without all of our brilliant volunteers and event teams who work incredibly hard to make the weekend what it is, so thank you to all of those involved.”

Steve Cram, Founder, Events of the North, added: "We've worked hard with Northumbrian Water, Northumberland County Council, Places Leisure, Northumbria Health Care NHS Foundation Trust and all of our other partners, to deliver another very successful Kielder Marathon weekend. Today rounded it all off brilliantly. The rain stayed away and we had great conditions for the runners. Looking at the times at the front of each field, it's clear that many of them took advantage of that! The course and our army of volunteers coped really well with a record number of participants.

"After running the 10K here yesterday, it was very fitting that Mayor of the North East Kim McGuinnes was on hand today to present prizes to our winners, supporting an event that both showcases such a wonderful part of our region, and also helps folk to get active."

Ross Wigham, director of communications at Northumbria Healthcare said “It's always a fantastic event here at Kielder and it’s great to see so many people getting involved. This is a really important weekend in Northumberland and a great way of promoting good health and active lifestyles.

“A huge well done to everyone who took part but also to all the local organisations who make the whole thing possible. We are incredibly grateful for all of the money raised for our Bright charity which will go on to benefit our staff and our patients.”

Cllr Jeff Watson, County Councillor, Cabinet Member for Healthy Lives, added: “This weekend offers something for everyone—from junior races to the half and full marathon events. This celebration of athletics highlights the incredible endurance and passion of runners while also welcoming families and individuals of all ages to experience the beauty of Kielder.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our local businesses, and a proud moment for Northumberland as we showcase our community spirit and Northumbrian hospitality."
